Military families often have to make sudden changes, and that includes adding dependents.
Here are the documents you will need to add a dependent:
-Birth Certificate
-Social Security Card
-Court Document placing the child in your household for at least 12 months (if adopted)
-Dependent Military ID Card
-Two Forms of Identification (see above) for ID Card renewal. For the initial card, only one form of identification is needed.
For your dependent’s status to be updated within 30 days in DEERS, you will need to provide the required supporting documents listed above and DFAS letter of approval.
If you do not have a DoD email address, then you will need to request that your required documents be sent to the PSC.
For any other questions, please call DFAS Customer Service at 1-888-332-7411.
Military dependents must renew their ID card every five years and provide the required documents for proof of status (birth certificate, social security card, court document, dependent military ID). Dependents also need two forms of ID when requesting an initial card.
For dependents in the DEERS system, their information must be updated within 30 days. An updated letter from DFAS is needed along with all other supporting documents when adding or removing a dependent. If you have any questions, call DFAS customer service at 1-888-332-7411.
The process to add a dependent is not always straightforward, so be sure to have all the necessary documents on hand and contact DFAS customer service if there are any questions. With the right information, adding a dependent can be a smooth process.
