Feeling The Pinch

By Fleet and Family Support Center

Is the high cost of living constantly on your mind? Everywhere you turn, there seems to be no relief in sight!  The average cost of gas in August 2007 was $2.76 a gallon, for August 2008 its jumped $3.88 a gallon, a whooping 41% increase.  And, there is the cost of food, clothing, utilities, childcare and the list is endless. You just watch those dollars flying from your wallet!!

With everything costing more, you can make a plan for getting back to basics.  These useful tips can help you keep your hard-earned dollars.

THE TOP TEN

    1. Be a smart shopper.  Clip coupons from newspaper, online, check your mailbox, the grocery store/commissary, and then use them wisely.

    2. Make a list and stick to it.  Eat before grocery shopping to avoid unnecessary spending.

    3. Limit the use of credit cards.  Use cash, you tend to be more careful in what you buy.

    4. Buy generic.  Brand names usually cost much more.

    5. Maintain your vehicle.  Routine maintenance gives you a safer vehicle, more fuel-efficiency, and is cheaper than repair costs.

    6. Car pool/ use public transportation.  Reduces wear and tear on your vehicle and reduces fuel cost at the pump.

    7. Pack your lunch.  You can eat healthy and save money at the same time.

    8. Review your insurance policy.   Some companies give you a break if you have more than one insurance product with them.

    9. Check your Credit Score.  Increased credit score may save you money by lowering interest rates, insurance premiums, and even your cell phone bill.

    10. Use MWR and ITT offices. Get reduced price tickets to parks, entertainment, and shows.  Look on line for free or inexpensive things to do in your community.

Most of all, develop a spending plan, track those expenses, and then you make better spending decisions!
