if a spouse commits suicide, what happens to the wife and children as far as getting life insurance? pension,etc.?

Good question not sure, did you try VA general information number. I'm sure they can connect you to the right department for help, 1800-827-1000 and you should ask them to mail you out a directory book that include a lot of valuable information.
